IPS DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, GERRY HALL offers insight into how the threat of so called ‘spy bugs’ have escalated in recent years.

Alarmingly, the internet is awash with cheap GSM audio spy devices. For as little as $7 on ebay, those inclined can purchase a bug, place it in your boardroom and compromise your security. Defending against this very real threat requires highly specialized equipment and skills. OUR SOLUTION

It is our opinion there are less than ten companies in the UK capable of carrying out a competent technical countermeasures sweep. Yes, you will find dozens of private detectives advertising de-bugging services on the web but, few will have any equipment and most will have absolutely no experience in this very technical area. They are merely ‘Jack of all trades’ attempting to take advantage of what they see as a lucrative opportunity.

However, it is very easy to ascertain the credibility of a search team by asking just two simple questions.

In the UK, the only acceptable answer to this question would be one of the following:

  • Oscor Green or Oscor 5000 Spectral Correlator
  • Raptor
  • Scanlock ECM
  • Ranger 2+2
  • Spectrum ECM
  • Spectrum Analyser

(Any one of the above units cost between £10,000 and £50,000 but are essential equipment without which, an efficient ‘sweep’ cannot be carried out)

Acceptable answers are:

  • Orion
  • Audiotell Broom
  • Locator/Hawk

(Again this equipment is essential and costs around £10,500 per unit.)

The non-professional will make up a variety of excuses as to why his equipment is better or why he doesn’t use an NLJD but the fact remains that all of the professional teams will have, at the very minimum, one item from each of these lists.
